The Casanatense Library possesses a very important music section.

Historical Collection

The music section of the old Libraria contains numerous texts of theoretical music, certainly the most important of its kind, as well as a small nucleus of madrigals and sacral chants of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Baini Collection
In 1844 the Library received as a donation the musical collection of Giuseppe Baini, former chorister and later camerlengo of the Pontifical Chapel. This important collection is made of 197 manuscripts and 819 printed works as well as compositions, theoretical and performed music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Paganini Collection
In 1972 the Library bought the manuscript collection of Niccolò Paganini that belonged to the W. Heyer Library of Cologne. It is composed of 90 manuscripts, mostly autographs, and the entire body of musical productions of the composer's work of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Compagnoni Marefoschi Collection
In 1973 the Library bought a substantial portion of the library that belonged to the aristocratic family of Compagnoni Marefoschi of Macerata. It includes 795 manuscripts of music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Between 1991 and 1996 the Library has made a number of purchases that have enlarged the collection of the Library, e.g., 103 lyric opera scores published in Paris (1774-1826) and also a substantial private collection of the musicologist Remo Giazotto (38 editions of musica practica and 30 editions of theoretical music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries).

Sgambati Archives
The Sgambati Archives were bought in 1994; it includes letters, photographs, sala programs and the major part of the artist's compositions - about 300 manuscripts and 101 printed editions - and more than 135 manuscripts and 350 printed compositions by other authors.

Respighi Archives
Also in 1994 the Library purchased the Respighi Archives, made up of he correspondence between the maestro, Ottorino Respighi, and his wife Elsa. In 1997 the Library acquired a small collection of documents and 25 draft manuscripts of various minor of the Italian musical world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Liturgical Music
There are different liturgical codices with neumatica annotations.

The Library possesses a copious collection of librettos for printed music. About 1.900 examples (Italian musical works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some from the nineteenth century and a series of French editions), frequently enriched by engravings of theatre scenes.
In all, the Library has more than 2.000 printed editions (1.422 of musica practica, 472 of theoretical music, 99 of liturgical music and 1.700 manuscripts (with more than 5.000 compositions).
